Character: Hiei
Timeline: Post anime
Personality: Hiei has many faults related to his survival in the demon world, and having been literally tossed off the floating island of his birth by his mother's best friend (because males weren't permitted in his mother's society). His upbringing by the demon bandits who found them shaped him; though as he grew in strength, even they came to fear his ruthlessness and forced him to leave.
Among these quirks (to describe them nicely) are his sheer stubbornness, refusal to die or give up regardless of what he has to give up to achieve whatever his goal is at that moment. He is quick to lose his temper, but never his control even in the heat of battle and life or death situations, of which he finds himself in on a daily basis and gives no mercy to any opponent. He has a somewhat cruel sense of humor, but nothing new considering who and what he is. He enjoys mocking people, even those he eventually comes to see as friends. Challenges are what keep him on his toes, so he seeks out those who he deems able to truly challenge him so he can grow stronger.
Because of how he came to be alone, he is extraordinarily self reliant, self confident (simply having survived and grown as powerful as he has), and self sufficient. This tends to have him seen as standoffish, cold, and rude (all of which are true). He tends to sneer at authority, unless it comes in the form of Mukuro - one of the three former demon kings, whom he works for in the end because he chose to - or one of the other few people he deems fit to be obeyed.
His impatience comes out just as often as his short temper, though not as visible while in the middle of a fight - if he can't see a reason to wait for something, he won't, even if he ends up getting into a situation that he can't get out of alone. To prepare himself for such situations, he tends to find other powerful demons. A notable example is Youko Kurama, a legend among demons whom Hiei states he befriends so he does not have to fight him.
With all his negative quirks, Hiei also has some somewhat redeeming qualities. He cannot help but be kind to his twin sister Yukina, despite her not knowing who he is. He goes out of his way to avoid upsetting her, even so much as vows to find her long lost brother (though knowing he'd never 'find' him). He's extraordinarily protective and loyal to those few who have managed to earn his respect, loyalty, and friendship.
A somewhat good, but also often frustrating habit of his is his lack of showing what he actually thinks of something or someone. At most, unless it's Yukina, he will display what can only be called tough love. He does not tolerate fools lightly, though even people he calls fools or idiots have their chance (miniscule as it may be) to prove themselves worth his time. He takes fighting seriously, taking the time to study each opponent and their fighting styles as he feels their demon energy to possibly pose a threat to himself or those he cares for. And works out a strategy (even if said strategy was to rip them to shreds as quickly as possible) sure to place him as the victor.
Hiei has an unusual code of honor. While he won't hesitate to use weak fighters to get to their allies, he also gives said ally the chance to save them before he really attacks. He increases his strength throughout the fight, testing his opponent before even considering going all out.
Despite starting out despising and looking down on humans, Hiei grows to be somewhat fond of a handful. Kazuma Kuwabara, for all their bickering and banter, manages to gain Hiei's respect for the huamn's sheer refusal to ever give up. Yusuke Urameshi is another, for how strong, determined, and persistent he is. He prefers people who stick up for themselves and don't give up, no matter how weak or stupid they might otherwise be. Kurama, despite having been 'reborn' as a human, still holds his high respect for being cunning and ruthless. Hiei goes through great lengths to avoid pissing Kurama off because of this. Genkai may be an old woman, but because of her toughness and power, Hiei generally listens.
Background: YYH Wiki
Abilities/Additional Notes: Hiei has a number of abilities and techniques (long range and short range) outside of swordsmanship. I feel the YYH Wiki describes them best. To summarize each of his attacks:
Element resistance - Hiei is able to withstand intense heat as well as intense cold thanks to his mother being an ice demoness and his father presumably being a fire demon (it is never specifically revealed, though commonly accepted)
Speed - He uses this the most to travel, along with attacking where his opponent least expects. This also leads to a side skill known as after image - basically he's moving fast enough that it appears he is in two or more places at once to better confuse his opponent.
Swordsman - He has been well versed in the use of the sword he carries, though tends towards the quicker strikes to better defeat his enemy faster.
Jagan Eye - While this particular kind of third eye is an implant, Hiei has learned how to use it's psychic abilities (such as telepathy, telekinesis, remote viewing, mind control on lesser demons and humans, and memory erasure). This eye is important in the rest of his attacks, as it is always open during each Flame attack, rather than hidden behind a white headband as it is when not in use.
Also attached to the Jagan is a green form covered in eyes that Hiei in the series only changes into once. This 'Jaganshi form' gives Hiei extra power, speed, strength; to the point he can summon multiple dragons. Hiei can also use this form to paralyze his opponents by binding them in constricting energy circles.
Dragon of the Darkness Flame - Hiei uses this technique more often than the Jaganshi form as it requires less demon energy and has fewer weaknesses since he fully mastered it. The dragon is literally a demon energy creature of that form, summoned by Hiei, that literally devours each opponent (including its summoner unless the summoner can absorb it). Unlike any other whom have attempted this technique, Hiei has been able to completely master it after the second summoning. He can also absorbed this dragon into his body, gaining a large boost in speed, power, and defense.
Fist of the Mortal Flame - Literally, Hiei can channel fire in the human world, centering them in one or both hands. With this technique, he can disintegrate objects with just the touch of a hand as he literally burns the material away. He can also use this as a flame thrower for attacks other than hand to hand.
Sword of the Darkness Flame - This is Hiei's last resort attack. It concentrates the Dragon of the Darkness Flame into a sword, rather than Hiei's arm. He hates relegating it to such a tactless and inelegant form, seeing it as taking the taste and art out of the fight.

[A short guy with odd black hair with white streaks in it and a white bandana covering his forehead is stretched out on some stones, PCD resting presumably on a raised knee as the red eyed person stares at the screen. Hands pillow the back of his head and eventually he smirks just a little, red eyes clearly bored.]
I hear there are scary monsters around here. I can offer protection for a price. Contact me for details. If you require a demonstration, give me a good reason and I just might oblige.
[He reaches towards the PCD to turn it off.]
Third-Person Sample: It was almost like the Makai. Like home. Everyone had to fight to survive, in one way or another. It suited the little demon. Some of the monsters were even entertaining, though fleetingly so. It didn't matter, he'd just keep going as he was. Kurama should be proud he was even offering his services to protect the fools of the city. Yes, it was for his own gain as well, but he was still doing it.
He sped up to run up along a crumbling wall, challenging himself to avoid falling into one of the many holes that dotted the decrepit building. It was almost more fun than beating up a monster or five. Just less risk at being injured where he had more of a difficulty in finding what he needed to heal properly.
There was also always the risk he'd go too far and simply pass out due to exhaustion - that was something he had to work on to avoid. Here... he couldn't afford that. Not without an ally in sensory range and without a hiding spot he felt comfortable enough allowing himself that luxury.
Hole, leap. Dodge. He slashed out with his sword to add difficulty to the run, wanting a bit more of a work out than what he'd managed so far that day. He saved most of his real attacks for those who came across him wanting a fight. Slowly people were learning he liked a challenge, and wasn't afraid to meet them for a spar. Or to the death, though he'd yet to deliver per his own reasons.
